(Feb. 1, 2016) -- A Long Beach man escaped serious injury or death this morning (Feb. 1) when a large tree on a city median just east of Bellflower Blvd. (near the Los Altos Target store parking lot) fell across the eastbound lanes of 23rd St. where he was driving. A parked car was also crushed.

Asked what went through his mind, Mr. McKinney said, "My life definitely flashed before my eyes there for a second. The whole car started squishing down on me. I didn't think it was going to stop there for a second, but it did." He added, "I just quickly jumped out of the window as quickly as a I could." [Scroll down for further.] |

A steady wind was blowing as we spoke with Mr. McKinney.
A City Attorney's office representative arrived on scene to take a statement from Mr. McKinney as we exited.
