News Stunner! Justin Rudd Halts Run For 3d District Council
(January 19, 2006) -- In an emotional announcement at what was scheduled to be his campaign kick-off fundraiser, LB animal advocate, community volunteer and internet promotion expert Justin Rudd has announced he is withdrawing as a candidate for the 3d district City Council seat.
Addressing a crowd that had gathered at a Belmont Shore restaurant, Mr. Rudd made the stunning announcement shortly after 6:00 p.m.
A little after 9:00 p.m., he sent the following email to supporters and friends:
It is after tremendous reflection that I am withdrawing my bid as candidate for City Council. I am moved and grateful for the many people who have shown me their support, however, I believe that I can better serve the community in my present position as head of the nonprofit Community Action Team.
I want to thank all those who have supported me with their time and resources in helping me launch my candidacy. I stand firm in my resolve to continue serving the community and pledge to improve the quality of life for my fellow residents.
Again, I thank you for your loyalty and hope that you will continue offering your support.
Sincerely, Justin!

Mr. Rudd had been scheduled to attend a Bluff Heights Neighborhood Association candidates' forum later that evening...and after 3d district Council candidates Norm Ryan, Gary DeLong, Stephanie Loftin and Charlie Legeman spoke, the host relayed news that Mr. Rudd had withdrawn from the race, producing gasps and audible surprise in the room.
LBReport.com has since received the following reaction:
3d district Council candidate Norm Ryan: "I'm susrprised. I think he would done exceptionally well. I think he would have brought people and issues into the race that otherwise might have been neglected. I will certainly do my best to try and make sure that doesn't happen. Running for office is not a walk in the park, and I respect it if he feels he can do more in his community volunteer capacity. I'm a fan of his and I still remain one."
3d district Council candidate Gary DeLong: "Justin is an asset to the 3rd District community. I wish him well in his current and future endeavors and look forward to partnering with him in the future."

On January 2, LBReport.com confirmed an L.A. Times story by Nancy Wride indicating that Mr. Rudd was considering a run for the 3d district City Council seat.
"I'm leaning in that direction but I haven't made a final decision," Mr. Rudd told LBReport.com at that time. "I've met with [potential] campaign consultants and I'll be announcing my decision shortly," he added.
And he did. Just days before the filing deadline, Mr. Rudd -- who previously led the successful campaign to create a Dog Zone on part of Belmont Shore's beachfront -- submitted the necessary paperwork and entered the race.
Part of the impetus for his run was the City Council's November/December action in moving to reverse long-standing LB policy that currently bans dog breeding and instead permit dog breeding on limited terms with payment of a license fee. Final Council action on the new dog breeding policy is still pending.
