Reader Steve Creech says the accident occurred just after 5:00 p.m. He didn't witness the accident, but says he arrived on scene just aftefr it happened...and at that time "several Good Samaritans had effectively taken control of the intersection to protect the fallen cyclist."
LBFD Public Information Officer Will Nash says the rider, a 31-yr old man, was transported to a hospital but had few immediate details.
The circumstances of the accident aren't known. Mr. Creech lives in the neighborhood...and comments:
"7th Street is a virtual freeway between Ximeno Avenue and PCH...Park Avenue south of 7th Street by virtue of its geographical proximity to the 7th Street Freeway has become a dangerous onramp/offramp for crosstown traffic cutting through our residential neighborhood. The Residents of Park Avenue have been diligently lobbying the City of Long Beach to "calm" traffic on our street since July of 2004 and we have made progress but when you witness this type of horrendous accident in very close proximity to your home, it raises serious concerns about the transportation element of the City's ambitious development plans."
