(Jan. 25, 2012) -- As heard LIVE earlier today on LBReport.com, Cal State University's Board of Trustees meeting in Long Beach voted to cap salaries at $325,000 starting this year for newly hired Presidents at its campuses. The Trustees' action follows controversy last year over their voted approval to pay an incoming San Diego State University president $400,000+ while voting to raise students' tuition by 12%. Gov. Brown criticized the Trustees' action and state Sen. Ted Lieu (D., southbay) introduced a bill to cap future increases at roughly the $325,000 sum. The salary cap was an amendment offered in a Board Committee this morning by Trustees Board chair Herbert Carter to recommendations initially proposed that were criticized for enabling higher salaries. Sen. Lieu addressed the Board Committee meeting at which the salary cap amendment was presented; Sen. Lieu indicated he supports the policy as amended; the Committee agreed to the $325,000 salary cap and forwarded it to the full Board of Trustees, which approved it. "The CSU Board of Trustees today moved unanimously to adopt a cap on salaries for campus presidents, inserted first-ever consideration of fiscal conditions into their policy, and changed the formula for comparing California salaries to make it a guide rather than the determining factor," Sen. Lieu said in a release after testifying at the CSU meeting. "These three changes are significant reforms that will help rationalize CSU executive compensation decisions...I commend the Board of Trustees for moving in the right direction."
