(Jan. 24, 2012) -- Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske has issued a release indicating that she will not be pursuing a run for state Assembly and will instead "focus my attention on serving the City of Long Beach for the remainder of my second term on the City Council." In her release, she itemizes several issues on which she's publicly dissented from the City Council's current majority and Mayor Bob Foster [without mentioning them by name]. Councilwoman Schipske (and Councilman Patrick O'Donnell) entered the race for the LB-area Assembly seat when incumbent Bonnie Lowenthal said she would seek a newly drawn state Senate seat; when Lowenthal pulled out of the state Senate race and said she'd seek another Assembly term, Councilman O'Donnell dropped his Assembly run and announced he'll seek a third Council term via write in. Councilwoman Schipske, who is mid-way through her second term of office, says in her statement that she plans to focus on Long Beach for the remainder of her second term [which ends in 2014]. Below is Councilwoman Schipske's statement verbatim as received this morning: I want to thank those who have encouraged me to run for higher office. Your support and confidence are gratifying. However, many people also have come forward and urged me to continue my work on the City Council -- being a voice of reason and asking the questions that need to be answered and bringing the community together through events, forums and discussions.
