(Jan. 17, 2015) -- LB's City Clerk's office says there'll be three names on the April 14, 2015 ballot for a 4th Council district "winner-take-all" (no runoff) special election to fill the Council seat vacated roughly two years early by now-Assemblyman Patrick O'Donnell.

The three candidates whose names will appear on the ballot (order not yet determined) are:

[Scroll down for further]

  • Daryl Supernaw. Mr. Supernaw finished first (with O'Donnell as a write-in) in the April 2012 election for the 4th district but was outpolled by O'Donnell in a June 2012 runoff (with O'Donnell's name on the ballot and backed by organized labor.) Mr. Supernaw is a business consultant, longtime Los Altos resident and son of a LB Firefighter. He currently chairs LB's Sustainable City Commission, an advisory body to the City Council on [Muni Code text] "issues relating to the environment, a sustainable city plan, efforts or programs to address environmental issues such as air quality, water quality, resource conservation relating to the protection and integrity of the natural environment..." Mr. Supernaw previously led the Atherton corridor neighborhood group that successfully convicned local officials to allocate sums for a project that covered the decades-detested "Atherton open ditch."

  • Herlinda Chico Ms. Chico is currently a media specialist (title listed on city website) for the City of Commerce's City Hall. She previously worked as an Executive Assistant at Los Angeles' Central City East, a business improvement district funded by special tax assessments approved by property owners in the industrial area between 3rd-8th Sts b/w Alamedia and San Pedro Sts. (east of "Skid Row.") Ms. Chico also previously worked as an aide to then-7th dist. Councilwoman Tonia Reyes Uranga, has lived in LB for a number of years and moved into the 4th Council district less than a year before filing paperwork to seek the 4th district Council seat in 2012. When Council incumbent O'Donnell announced he'd seek a third Council term, Ms. Chico dropped out of the race and endorsed O'Donnell. In December 2014, she was first to file paperwork for the vacated Council seat and began seeking campaign contributions. Ms. Chico recently announced the endorsements of 1st dist. Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez, LBUSD Schoolboard members Megan Kerr and John McGuiness and LBCC Trustee Sunny Zia.

  • Richard Lindemann. The City Clerk's office doesn't indicate a ballot self-description or a candidate statement for Mr. Lindemann.

In 2012, Councilman O'Donnell used a write-in procedure under LB's term limits law to seek a third four-year Council term. Two years into his Council term, he successfully sought Sacramento office in 2014, triggering the special election (with a City Clerk requested, Council budgeted cost of $200,000) to fill the remainder of the Council term.

Whoever prevails in the district stretching from Los Altos and part of El Dorado Park to the Cherry Ave. corridor will have a vote with the rest of LB's new Council majority on budget priorities including police and fire levels for taxpayers, land use, proposed developments and quality of life in the 4th district and citywide.
