(Jan. 14, 2015) -- Last night (Jan. 13), a 16 year old young man (about to turn 17) was at home on his computer when he heard a crash and, without wasting a moment to put his shoes on, ran outside to spot a car that had flown off the 6th St. onramp to the northbound 710 freeway. The car had plunged roughly 50 feet to the ground, ending-up upside-down on its roof in the area of Chester Place/Fairbanks Ave. (near Loma Vista Dr.)
The driver, a woman in her 20s, was seat-belted and trapped inside. The young man communicated with her and then used a glass-breaking tool on his utility pocket knife to free her. [Scroll down for further] |
LBFD Public Information Officer Brian Fisk told LBREPORT.com today (Jan. 14) that LBFD units arrived shortly after the accident and found the young man seated on the curb alongside the driver and helping her.
PIO Fisk provided our contact information to the young man's adult familymember, who phoned us and allowed to speak with the young man today. We'll call him Andrew for now. To hear Andrew describe what he did and explain in his own words why got involved and did what he did, click for on-demand audio here. Firefighter/PIO Fisk tells LBREPORT.com that he intends to enter the young man's name for a CA State Firefighters' Association award recognizing acts of Valor.
