In a release, LBPD states:

On Saturday, January 10, 2014, at approximately 2:00 a.m., officers responded to a residence in the 6500 block of E. Rosebay Street to investigate a shooting involving a male suspect that stemmed from a domestic dispute. The incident resulted in two officer involved shootings and injury to one officer.

At approx. 2:50 a.m., while officers were still at the scene investigating the initial shooting incident, the suspect called the home and stated he was on his way back with his infant son, and [allegedly] made threats towards the family members and police officers. He specifically stated he would harm the baby and use him as a shield against police.

The suspect returned to the location driving a dark colored SUV. He got out of his vehicle, confronted officers, and an exchange of gunfire occurred. The suspect then got back in his vehicle and fled, and officers initiated a vehicle pursuit. It was unknown if the baby was actually in the vehicle.

When the suspect reached the area of Bandini Street & Oliver Street in the City of San Pedro, he stopped his vehicle and [allegedly] fired upon officers who returned fire. The suspect then drove off, stopped again shortly thereafter, and surrendered. He was taken into custody without injury.

The infant was located in the backseat of the suspect's vehicle at the conclusion of the pursuit. Although uninjured, he was transported to a local hospital as a precaution and released later to family in San Pedro. A handgun was located in the front seat of the suspect's vehicle.

One officer was injured from glass fragments from his patrol vehicle window when it was struck by gunfire. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment and released.

The suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Joseph Gonzales. He has been booked for attempted murder, evading police, child cruelty that could result in possible injury or death, assault with a firearm on a police officer, felon in possession of a firearm, parole violation, and is being held at the Long Beach City Jail without bail. He is currently on parole on an unrelated case. It was determined the suspect resides at the Long Beach residence with the mother of the child and other family members.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the incidents and has not spoken with investigators should contact Long Beach Police Homicide Detectives at (562) 570-7244. Anonymous tips may be submitted by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), texting TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or visiting www.lacrimestoppers.org.

UPDATE: 5:30 p.m. Below are still-photos from the San Pedro crime scene (area Bandini/Oliver) earlier today (Jan. 10) showing the bullet scarred windshield of the LBPD police car involved in today's predawn pursuit that began in ELB (area Rosebay/Josie) after an armed suspect allegedly engaged in an exchange of gunfire with officers who'd responded to reports of shots fired in connection with a domestic dispute. The suspect then fled the ELB crime scene with his five month old child inside his vehicle during a pursuit to San Pedro.

The first photo shows the windshield of the LBPD vehicle. The second and third photos show the interior of the suspect's vehicle. The second photo appears to show a handgun. The third photo shows a child car seat.

The pooled video was shot by ABC7 (KABC-TV) at the San Pedro crime scene with the cooperation of LBPD.

(Jan. 10, 2015, updated 2:50 p.m. from multiple updates) -- LBPD has provided the update below on this morning's predawn events which began in a quiet East Long Beach neighborhood (6500 block of E. Rosebay, east of Palo Verde, north of Spring St.) where a domestic dispute and reports of shots fired shortly brought an LBPD response shortly before 2 a.m. Less than an hour later, LBPD says the suspect returned to the crime scene and it is believed an exchange of gunfire occurred between the suspect and responding officers. The suspect then fled -- with his five month old child in his vehicle -- in a pursuit that led to San Pedro (area Bandini/Oliver).
[2:50 p.m. UPDATE] LBPD has sent the following public advisory:

[LBPD text] This morning, 1/10/15, at approx. 2:00 a.m., officers responded to a residence in the 6500 block of E. Rosebay Street to investigate a shooting involving a male suspect related to a domestic dispute.

The preliminary information is as follows:

At approx. 2:50 a.m., while officers were still at the scene investigating, the suspect returned to the location, and was confronted by officers. At that time, it is believed an exchange of gunfire occurred between the suspect and officers.

The suspect was able to get back in his vehicle and flee, and officers went into pursuit. When the suspect reached the area of Bandini Street & Oliver Street in San Pedro, we believe a second exchange of gunfire occurred. The suspect then surrendered and was taken into custody without injury.

Officers received information while investigating the initial shooting incident that the suspect may have his 5-month-old infant with him, and the infant was located in the suspect's vehicle at the conclusion of the pursuit in San Pedro. The infant was not injured and was taken into protective custody.

One officer was injured from what we believe to be glass fragments from his patrol vehicle window, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
