(Jan. 1, 2016, 3:40 a.m., updated 9:55 a.m.) -- A vehicle carrying four people somehow went out of control on PCH at Magnolia Ave. at about 10:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve, crashed into a light pole...and one of the persons in the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. Three teens (one an 18 year old woman, and two 16 year old males) survived and were transported to hospitals.

[UPDATE] In a release, LBPD states:

On Thursday, December 31, 2015, at approximately 10:47 p.m., Long Beach Police responded to the 500 block of W. Pacific Coast Highway regarding an injury traffic collision, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Arriving officers discovered a 2010 Honda Civic with major damage. Long Beach Fire Department paramedics responded and determined the driver, a 23-year-old Long Beach resident, deceased at the scene. The three passengers, an 18-year-old female and two 16-year-old males, all Long Beach residents, were transported to a local hospital with various injuries.

The preliminary investigation revealed the Honda was traveling eastbound on Pacific Coast Highway. According to witnesses, the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it began to spin sideways. The vehicle slid toward the south curb and collided with a light pole. It appears all occupants were seat belted at the time of the collision. No other vehicles or parties were involved in this incident.

The Los Angeles County Coroner will determine positive identification and notify next of kin.

LBPD asks anyone with information regarding what took place to contact Detective Steve Fox of the Collision Investigation Detail at (562) 570-7110. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous, may call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or text TIPLA plus your tip to 274637 (CRIMES), or www.LACrimeStoppers.org.

Police closed PCH in both directions for several blocks for several hours to investigate what took place. We may learn more later today (Jan. 1) and we'll update this page accordingly.
