(Jan. 30, 2017, 11:55 a.m.) -- LBREPORT.com provides extended VIDEO coverage of the Jan. 28, 2017 LB Animal Care Services "open house" below.

The annual public event recognized community volunteers and partnerships and noted accomplishments in 2016 by the city management-operated bureau that operates LB's animal shelter, provides animal control services, handles licensing and oversees multiple animal related laws in Long Beach and surrounding cities.

As previously reported by LBREPORT.com, the city bureau announced on Jan. 6 that it had euthanized fewer cats and dogs in 2016 than in 2015 or ever before: with 717 fewer dogs and cats killed in 2016 compared to 2015, and acknowledged that over 1,100 fewer cats and dogs impounded in 2016 than 2015, a 15% reduction.

As also separately reported by LBREPORT.com, this year's open house included an appearance by LB Mayor Robert Garcia and City Auditor Laura Doud, at which the Mayor commended the city agency and community volunteers for their work and announced that he has asked Auditor Doud to perform an efficiency review of key Animal Care Services practices in Long Beach.

The Mayor's announcement to the group follows a Jan. 9 letter by him to Auditor Doud, in which the Mayor sought a review of volunteer programs, community adoption fairs, other proven strategies, with a comparison to best practices and ways to enhance staffing, strengthen medical care, and support adoption efforts. The grassroots group "Stayin' Alive Long Beach" has urged LB Animal Care Services to undertake additional measures, including more robust adoption efforts, and has criticized Mayor Garcia (and by implication LB's policy-setting Councilmembers) for not doing more to implement the changes it seeks.
