(Jan. 31, 2017, 6:15 p.m.) -- LBREPORT.com has learned that the FBI is investigating this morning's bomb threat to Long Beach's Alpert Jewish Community Center...along with threats to JCCs in at least 14 U.S. cities today (Jan. 31) plus 43 more in two waves of threats since Jan. 9.
The FBI's National Press office states: [FBI Nat'l Press Office statement] The FBI and the U.S. Justice Dept's Civic Rights Division are investigating possible civil rights violations in connection with threats to Jewish Community Centers across the country. The FBI will collect all available facts and evidence, and will ensure this matter is investigated in a fair, thorough, and impartial manner. As this is matter is ongoing, we are not able to comment further at this time. LBPD Public Information Officer Nancy Pratt tells LBREPORT.com that officers responded to a bomb threat call at about 9:15 a.m. and, with the assistance of AJCC staff, the building was evacuated. "A methodical search was conducted with the assistance of LBPD K9s" and no explosives were found, PIO Pratt says. No one was hurt in the two and a half hour incident, but the context extends beyond Long Beach. The JCC Association of North America says that earlier today, 14 JCCs in 10 states plus one Canadian province received threats...and it's the third wave of threats to JCCs nationally. "On January 18, 27 Jewish community centers in 17 states received threats, and on January 9, 16 centers in nine states received threats," says the JCC Ass'n of North America. NBC/NY reports that earlier today, JCCs in New Haven, CT, West Orange NJ, Syracuse, NY, Salt Lake City, Utah, Milwaukee, WI and San Jose, California received threats. The JCC Ass'n of North America says all the threats from the previous two dates have been determined to be hoaxes and the FBI is actively investigating the source or sources of these calls, Further as newsworthy.
