Funeral For 39-yr old LB Murder Victim (7th/Olive) Mother of Seven; No Suspects Named Or In Custody

Graciela Zavala funeral

(July 16, 2001) -- Funeral services were held today for Graciela Zavala, the 39-year old mother of seven shot to death last week near 7th and Olive (b/w Atlantic and MLK).

A sizable crowd assembled at ELB's St. Cornelius church to pay their respects at midmorning. Inside the church foyer, a display adorned with handwritten notes conveyed grief and loss and expressed sympathy to her children.

As previously reported on LBReport.com, the crime took place at roughly 11:15 p.m. on Sunday, July 8. The 7th/Olive neighborhood is not far from St. Anthony's church.

Police say Ms. Zavala was outside an apartment building with a group of people when someone walked up to the group, approaching from a nearby alley, and fired multiple shots. A woman was hit but survived; a teenage boy was grazed; Ms. Zavala was mortally wounded.

LBPD told LBReport.com today they have no suspects and no one is in custody. They've asked anyone with information about this crime to call Homicide Detectives Stephen Jones or Mark McGuire at (562) 570-7244.
