(July 16, 2001) -- Funeral services were held today for Graciela Zavala, the 39-year old mother of seven shot to death last week near 7th and Olive (b/w Atlantic and MLK).
A sizable crowd assembled at ELB's St. Cornelius church to pay their respects at midmorning. Inside the church foyer, a display adorned with handwritten notes conveyed grief and loss and expressed sympathy to her children.
As previously reported on LBReport.com, the crime took place at roughly 11:15 p.m. on Sunday, July 8. The 7th/Olive neighborhood is not far from St. Anthony's church.
Police say Ms. Zavala was outside an apartment building with a group of people when someone walked up to the group, approaching from a nearby alley, and fired multiple shots. A woman was hit but survived; a teenage boy was grazed; Ms. Zavala was mortally wounded.
