Quadruple Shooting, One Victim Dies, 1600 block Rose Ave.

LBPD chases suspects by car and on foot; one suspect allegedly points handgun at pursuing officer who fires one round; suspect escapes, uncertain if he was hit; second suspect (driver) stops car, is arrested and booked for murder

(July 22, 2001) -- A quadruple shooting at roughly 11:20 p.m. on Saturday night July 21 has left a 40-year old man dead, three victims (ages 12, 16 and 22) injured, in the 1600 block of Rose Ave., two blocks west of Cherry Ave., two block south of PCH.

LBPD says a group of people were attending a gathering at a residence "when a vehicle occupied by two suspects drove up, with at least one subject exiting the vehicle and firing numerous shots into the crowd."

A 40 year old man was pronounced dead at the scene. A 12 year old girl suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh. A 16 year old boy sustained a gunshot wound to the arm. A 22 year old man received graze wounds to the chin and shoulder. The latter three victims' injuries were described as non-life threatening.

Police say a witness phoned LBPD's communications center and "provided a description of the suspect vehicle which was immediately broadcast over the police radio."

LBPD spotted a vehicle matching that description in the area of 21st St. and Martin Luther King Ave. A patrol officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the suspect vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit began, police say.

LBPD says a passenger in the vehicle, armed with a handgun, exited the vehicle and fled on food while ignoring commands to stop. As a foot pursuit began, the suspect allegedly turned towards the pursuing officer with the handgun. Police say the officer, fearing for his safety, fired one round at the suspect who dropped his weapon but continued to flee.

A perimeter was set up and the SWAT team activated, but the suspect disappeared into the night. He is still at large as of this posting.

Meanwhile, the driver of the suspect vehicle stopped in the area of 20th St. and Olive Ave. where he was arrested; the 25 year old suspect, a LB resident, was booked on murder charges.

LBPD asks anyone with information regarding this incident to call Homicide Detectives Richard Birdsall and Scott Lasch at (562) 570-7244.

On June 4, six blocks south of the July 21 quadruple shooting, three LB residents were shot at numerous times as they crossed 10th Street in area of Rose Ave at about 10:30 p.m. One of the victims, a 16 year old girl, was shot in the head and died.
