(July 11, 2002, updated July 12) -- ELB/Los Altos residents have a new gas station and convenience store in their neighborhood. At 7 a.m. July 12, a new Chevron station and adjacent Extra Mile store opened for business on the SW corner of Bellflower Blvd. and Los Coyotes Diagonal. A more formal grand opening will take place in the coming days.
The convenience store offers food, Suava Java Coffee and more (inside views, below).
Manager Rosa Vargas tends to details. "The coffee will be fresh," said Ms. Vargas, adding they offer food and other items.
Take a look:
At one point, there was controversy over initial plans (since abandoned) for a "Jack in the Box" on the site. The location previously housed a gas station, and separate adjacent liquor store and real estate office. Use of the property became a neighborhood issue in the 2000 election contest that pitted then-incumbent Councilman Del Roosevelt against then-challenger Dennis Carroll.
At the December 17, 2001 City Council meeting, now 4th district Councilman Carroll presented a list of conditions on the use advanced by neighboring homeowners, supported by the Councilman and, he indicated, accepted by the station owner. The City Council voted to approve them and they can be viewed by clicking here.
