LB Crime Stats for Jan-Mar '02 Show Disturbing Rise in Aggravated Assaults & Comm'l Burlaries...And Nearly Double the Murders Over Jan-Mar 2001

(July 10, 2002) -- LB City Hall has released crime data for the first quarter (Jan 1-Mar 30) 2002 of compared to the 1st quarter of 2001, which we post below.

LBReport.com doesn't usually post quarterly (13 week) crime statistics, believing the relatively brief time period isn't sufficient to discern long term trends, up or down. However, we noticed disturbing increases in some serious (Part 1) crimes -- aggravated assault and commercial burglaries -- in the 1st quarter of 2002 that parallel increases in the same crimes for all of 2001 compared to 2000. In our judgment, this clearly indicates a continuing upward trend in these crimes.

The 1st quarter crime stats also indicate an 80% increase (near doubling) in the number of LB murders in the first quarter of 2002 compared to the 1st quarter of 2001. Between Jan 1 and March 30, 2002, LB had 18 (averaging more than one murder a week) while a year ago, there were 10. For all of 2001, LB had 49 murders and 49 for all of 2000.

The 1st quarter 2002 crime stats showed decreases in rape (-3.4%), robbery (-3.5%), auto theft (-8.3%), petty theft (-6.6%) and grand theft (-1.4%). Total Part 2 (other) crimes also decreased (-1.2%).

The net result: total LB crime (Part 1 plus Part 2) rose 1.7% in the 1st quarter of 2002 compared to the 1st quarter of 2001. Data below:
