LBPD Officer Involved Shooting, 1100 block 2d St.

(July 17, 2004) -- An LB police officer was involved in a shooting on Friday July 16 at about 11:00 p.m.

In a written release, LBPD says a man in his early 20s flagged down a patrol officer in the area of Orange Ave. and Broadway...and as the officer got out of his patrol car, he noticed the man had an open alcoholic container.

The man allegedly yelled something at the officer, started walking away, acted erratically and the officer radioed for assistance. The release states:

For an unknown reason, the subject charged at the officer and became involved in a confrontation after which the subject continue to run through the streets and sidewalks while yelling. The subject was acting ina bizarre manner and the officer followed him to the rear of a house in the 1100 block of 2nd Street where the suspect was shot by the officer. The subject was transported to a local hospital and treated for a gunshot wound.

The preliminary investigation showed that the suspect was unarmed. The confrontation and actions between the officer and suspect are being investigated by the Long beach Police Department as well as the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office...

Anyone with information about what took place is asked to contact LBPD Homicide Detective Scott Lasch at (562) 570-7244.
