Fast Work By LBPD Nabs Fifth Suspect -- Alleged Shooter -- In Pine Ave. Fatal Shooting; He's A LB Resident...Apprehended By Feds At Mexican Border

(July 10, 2006) -- In very fast police work coordinated with federal officials, LBPD says it has apprehended a fifth suspect -- believed to be the alleged shooter -- near the Mexican border after the fatal shooting of a 15 year old boy near 1st and Pine shortly after midnight on June 9.

In a written release, LBPD says its preliminary investigation "revealed that the victim was walking on Pine Avenue with several other adult family members and was stopped at 1st Street. A car pulled up next to the group, a verbal altercation occurred which then escalated into the shooting."

The victim, Brian Cruz, 15, of San Pedro, was struck once and was transported to a local hospital; he did not survive.

    LBPD's release continues:

Within seconds, Detectives James Richardson and Don Goodman, who were working overtime in the area at the time of the shooting, broadcast information on the shooting over the police radio and began a foot pursuit after the moving suspect vehicle. The detectives’ broadcast alerted Officers Ralph Garcia and Brian Collette who were already in the area and enabled them to initiate a felony traffic stop that resulted in the apprehension of 4 out of 5 suspects near 4th Street and the Promenade. A fifth suspect had fled the vehicle just after the shooting.

With the continued on-going investigation, detectives learned that the suspect may be enroute to Mexico. With the assistance of the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the suspect responsible for the shooting was apprehended at the US/Mexico border.

The shooter has been identified as 18 year-old Cesario Vasquez of Long Beach. He is being held at the Long Beach City Jail without bail. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

Anyone who may have information or witnessed this incident is urged to contact the LBPD's Homicide Detectives Scott Lasch or Malcolm Evans at (562) 570-7244.
