(July 14, 2008) -- As first reported on LBReport.com front page before noon today, a Sunday sewage spill has prompted city officials to close Alamitos Bay area waters to swimmers from Colorado Lagoon to the Peninsula area.
The closure only affects swimmers and those with water contact...but the sandy beaches are OK for sunning (and boats can traverse the area).
Nelson Kerr, Recreational Water Manager tells LBReport.com that at about 7 p.m. Sunday night (July 13) his agency learned of a raw sewage spill from a restroom and nearby manhole cover on the north side of Mother's Beach.
It's estimated (caveat: estimate only) that about 300 gallons of raw sewage got in the water. The city was testing the waters this morning (results pending) and to be protective of public health, wants two "clean" tests before reopening the waters to swimmers.
That means the earliest estimate of these waters being reopened to swimmers is probably Wednesday.
Further as we learn it on LBReport.com.
