Latest CA Redistricting Comm'n Maps Put Parts of Long Beach Into THREE State Senate Districts & THREE Assembly Districts; Cong District Action Expected Sunday

(July 24, 2011, 7:30 a.m.) -- Updating a developing story that LBReport.com continues to follow, in an all-day Saturday session (July 23), the CA Redistricting Commission made finalizing changes -- in some cases on a street by street level -- to "visualizations" (pre-final release drafts) that put parts of Long Beach into three state Senate districts and three Assembly districts.

Finalizing actions on Long Beach's closely watched new Congressional district lines are expected today (Sunday).

If ultimately adopted by the Commission and not changed further by possible litigation, these election district lines would determine how Long Beach is represented by elected officials in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. for the next ten years.

The actions below aren't final...but they are on the road to being released as final drafts at the Commission's July 28 meeting with voted adopting due by mid-August.

State Senate: Most of Long Beach would be in a new state Senate district (which includes the Port of LB but not Port of LA) that stretches northward from the ocean through Bell and into Huntington Park (southeast of downtown Los Angeles) comprised of a citizen voting age population that the Commission estimates is 52% Latino, 14% Black and 8% Asian.

A large chunk of SE LB -- from El Dorado Park areas south into Belmont Shore -- would be attached to an Orange County state Senate district...and a small part of NW Long Beach (including the Coolidge Triangle area) would be in a Compton-Carson state Senate district.

Assembly: Most of Long Beach would be in one Assembly district (23% Latino, 12% Black, 12% Asian citizen voting age population). Areas "north of the railroad tracks" and including most of North Long Beach would be attached to a Lakewood/Paramount area Assembly district stretching northward into Bell (57% Latino, 12% Black citizen voting age population) and a chunk of northwestern NLB (including Coolidge Triange and DeForest Park) would be in a Compton area Assembly district (roughly 43% Black adult voter population, 0.4% Latino).

If ultimately adopted by the Commission (and not changed further by possible litigation), these election district lines would be used to decide how Long Beach is represented at the state and federal level for the next ten years.

These changes aren't final, but unlike previous tweaking these "visualizations" are now expected to come to the July 28 Commission meeting at which final draft maps will be released in mid-August.

And whatever maps the Commission adopts may or may not be challenged in Court.

This morning (July 23), the Commission is scheduled to (again) discuss Los Angeles County Congressional districts.
