(July 6, 2012) -- On July 6, LBPD identified the suspect arrested in this case as Anthony Glen Gorospe, 51, of Long Beach.
(July 5, latest update 8:19 p.m., reflects multiple updates since initial breaking in 8 a.m. hour) -- LBPD describes in a release below a harrowing situation that developed shortly before 8:00 a.m. today (July 5) in the area of 61st St/John Ave. (between Orange/Cherry, north of South St.) where a man in a residence allegedly shot and wounded a LB Code Enforcement inspector, then allegedly fired further rounds as additional arrived. A barricaded suspect situation developed...and the standoff lasted until shortly before 3:00 p.m. when tear gas was deployed (using a San Bernardino bomb squad unit) into the residence and the suspect allegedly fired additional rounds and yelled out at officers to shoot him. The suspect (whom LBPD didn't identify in its release until it could verify his identify) exited the residence but allegedly failed to comply with officers' directions...and a K9 officer was deployed and SWAT officers took the man into custody. UPDATE: At 7:57 p.m., LBPD issued the following release: Today, July 5, 2012, at approximately 7:52 a.m., a City of Long Beach Code Enforcement Inspector was shot while attempting to serve an Inspection Warrant at a residence in the 6100 block of John Avenue, and the suspect [allegedly] responsible was taken into custody. And since some readers asked, we did too: why wasn't the LA County bomb squad on scene instead of San Bernardino County's bomb squad? LBPD Public Information Officer Nancy Pratt says, "LASD is not equipped with the particular piece of equipment that we needed." LBReport.com believes we were the first outlet to report the developing situation in the 8:00 a.m. hour on our front page: www.LBReport.com. Further to follow.
