(UPDATED, 8:00 a.m. July 17, 2012) -- An LBPD investigation is active and ongoing following an attempted armed robbery of a jewelry store in the 1200 block of E. Anaheim St. yesterday (July 16). Good Samaritans aided the store owner in a struggle with an armed suspect and the suspect's gun discharged...but LBPD says injuries to the suspect and victim were NOT from the gunshot.

LBPD PIO Sgr. Aaron Eaton explains that the store has two doors: a front (glass) entry door through and then a metal-gated areas that employees let individual customers enter. Sgt. Eaton says a suspect -- who was ultimately arrested -- was allowed to enter that second gated area.

Sgt. Eaton says additional people were outside the store when the incident occurred and during the ensuring struggle a few people went in the store to assist the victim. At this point, Detectives are uncertain how many, if any, individuals outside the store might have have involved in the crime (additional suspects).

LBPD's investigation into this is ongoing...and the ongoing investigation is the reason cited by LBPD for declining to release the name of the arrested suspect for now.

Sgt. Eaton says the injuries sustained by the victim and the suspect were NOT caused by a gunshot fired during the incident.

Sgt. Eaton says (as we reported based on LBPD information yesterday) that the gun belonged to the suspect.

One of the Good Samaritans was from out of town (location unconfirmed at this point). Another was woman who heard the common and went into the store to see what was happening.
