Robert Garcia Announces He's Running For Mayor

Residents Report Receiving Emailed Announcement Although They Didn't Sign Up For Campaign-Related Materials

(July 17, 2013) -- One day after Mayor Bob Foster said he wouldn't seek reelection, Robert Garcia, who since May 2009 has represented LB's 1st Council district (roughly from north Pine to south Wrigley), has announced he is running for Mayor.

At midafternoon today (July 17), residents reported receiving emails in their in-boxes -- although they didn't sign up to receive campaign related emails from him -- a link to a YouTube video showing Garcia delivering what the video calls "a big announcement." In the video, Garcia states in part:

...I'm proud of our record over the last few years. We reformed our public pensions, saving the city hundreds of millions of dollars. When I first came into office, we had a budget deficit; today, it's a budget surplus. We've made investments in technology, in open government, and we've opened parks throughout the city....

Previously announced candidates for Mayor include Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske, LBCC Trustee and Long Beach lawyer Doug Otto, and former NFL player Damon Dunn.
