LBPD Says Alleged Hatchet-Wielding Wife Was Standing Over Husband & Threatening To Kill Him; She Allegedly Refuses Officers' Orders To Drop The Hatchet; An Officer Fires His Gun; She's Not Hit and Is Arrested

(July 21, 2013) -- A woman allegedly armed with a hatchet -- who police say was standing over her husband and threatening to kill him -- prompted a no-injury officer-involved shooting last night (July 20) after she allegedly refused offciers' orders to drop the weapon and an officer fired his weapon to prevent the attack.

The woman wasn't struck by the gunfire, surrendered to officers and was arrested; the man wasn't injured.

In a release, LBPD says:

On Saturday, July 20, 2013, at approximately 11:05 p.m., the Long Beach Police Department responded to the 1100 block of Walnut Avenue regarding a female armed with a hatchet and threatening to kill her husband, which resulted in an officer involved shooting with no injuries.

Upon arrival, officers observed the female inside a residence armed with a hatchet and standing over her husband preparing to attack him. The female refused to follow the officers' orders to drop the weapon, and an officer discharged his firearm to stop the attack.

The female, who was not struck by gunfire, immediately surrendered to officers and was taken into custody. The male victim was not injured during the attack.

The suspect, identified as a 33-year old Melanie McGhee of Long Beach, was booked for assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder and is being held on $500,000 bail.

As with all officer involved shootings that occur, detectives from the Long Beach Police Homicide Detail responded to begin conducting their investigation into the shooting incident.
