Team coverage by Bill Pearl & Joe Mello

(July 6, 2013, multiple updates from front page breaking) -- A small plane towing a banner crashed this afternoon (July 6) at about 1:15 p.m. just off the 405 freeway at the NW corner of the Walnut Ave. bridge. It came to rest on the incline just above the freeway lanes (above the Orange Ave. offramp) and narrowly missed nearby industrial structures and the nearby (closed) Burroughs School buildings.

In the 2 p.m. hour, 405 freeway traffic was jammed north and southbound from the crash scene and will likely remain that way for some time.

Long Beach Airport says all its runways remain open and operational and no other operations were affected by this incident. However, JetBlue Airways is experiencing flight delays and cancellations due to a separate (very serious) aircraft incident (not involving JetBlue but another carrier) at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Diversions to airports including San Jose International Airport are to be expected.

The FAA and NTSB will be following up. Further as we learn it on LBREPORT.com.
