UPDATE: Long Beach Actually Had TEN Shootings During July 4th Holiday Period; There Were Three More On July 5th: Two in Central LB, One In NLB


(July 8, 2014, 1:35 p.m.) -- LBREPORT.com has learned that Long Beach actually had TEN shootings between late Thursday night (July 3) and the midnight hour Monday (July 7th), not seven as we'd previously believed. We learned today (July 8) of three shootings on July 5: two in Central LB (6th district) and one in NLB (9th dist.)



Since Jan. 1, 2014: Red Xs=2014 murders; Blue Xs=2014 shootings, person wounded; Brown Xs=shots fired at victim(s), not hit; Purple Xs=2014 shots at occupied residence/vehicle; Green Xs=shots at unoccupied vehicle/residence








LBPD Public Information Officer Marlene Arrona tells LBREPORT.com the following re the July 5th shootings:

  • July 5th, about 1 a.m.: officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Gundry to assist LBFD with a possible shooting victim; arriving officers found a man (adult) with what appeared to be a non-life threatening gunshot wound; LBFD transported the victim to a hospital; LBPD's investigation is ongoing.

  • July 5th, about 2:25 a.m. (less than ninety minutes later), officers were dispatched to a report of shots heard in the 100 block of E. 68th Way. Arriving officers found an occupied residence hit by gunfire. Officers didn't locate any person who was hit. What took place is being investigated as possibly gang related.

  • July 5th, about 6:40 p.m.: officers were dispatched to the area of Elm Avenue/Burnett Street regarding shooting call; officers located a man (adult) who sustained what appeared to be a non-life-threatening gunshot wound; he was transported to a hospital and the incident is being investigated as possibly gang related.

The July 4th holiday period also included these previously reported shootings:

  • July 3, roughly 9:55 p.m.: LBPD responds to a shooting in the area of 56th St./Locust Ave; officers locate a man (adult) who'd been shot; he's transported to a hospital in serious condition; no suspect info immediately available; it's being investigated as possibly gang related.

  • July 4, approx. 12:30 p.m.: Officers dispatched to a shots call, area 6500 block Gardenia; officers locate a male victim determined deceased at the scene. No suspect info at this point.

  • July 4, approx. 1:30 p.m.,: Officers dispatched to 5800 block Elm Ave. re assault with deadly weaapon call, arrive to find a man with injured arm who was sitting in a vehicle when someone fired from another vehicle, breaking a window; no suspect or suspect vehicle info [caveat: We're not sure at this point if this shooting will ultimately be classified as a "hit" shooting to a person or a shooting at an occupied vehicle.]

  • July 4, approx. 3:02 p.m.: officers dispatched to 5500 block Ackerfield Avenue regarding an assault with a deadly weapon call, locate a male victim (no age immediately available) with a non-life-threatening gunshot injury; he's transported to a hospital.

  • July 4, approx. 4:10 p.m.: officers dispatched to the area of Pine Ave./E. 15th Street regarding a shooting; man (adult) has non-life-threatening wounds, he's transported to a hospital

  • July 6, approx 12: 35 a.m., Spring St./Santa Fe, officers dispatched to a report of shots heard in the area of Spring St./Santa Fe Ave. Arriving officers found a man (adult) who sustained a gunshot injury. He was transported to a local hospital with an injury that appeared to be non-life-threatening.

  • July 7, 12:45 a.m.: Area of South St./Lemon Ave., bullets struck an occupied apartment building...with no persons hit.

LBPD's investigations of all of these crimes is ongoing...and LBPD PIO Arrona says that all but two of the incidents (1600 block Gundry Ave. shooting plus Spring/Santa Fe shooting) are being investigated as gang related.
