(July 17, 2015, 8:40 a.m.) -- On top of an ongoing downtown power outage tapping already-thin LBPD resources, officers responded overnight to a shooting in the still-illuminated 1300 block E. Anaheim St. near MacArthur Park (just east of Orange Ave.)

Initial information is sketchy. LBPD Public Information Officer Marlene Arrona tells LBREPORT.com that on July 17 at about 1:45 a.m., a male juvenile in his teens was hit and his injury appears non-life-threatening.

It's the fourth shooting -- one of which was fatal -- within in eight days in the 6th Council district...where Council incumbent (since 2007) Dee Andrews has announced he will seeking re-election in April 2016 using the term-limit bypass write-in procedure.

Within the past eight days, the 6th Council district has had these shootings:

  • July 9: 1700 block of Cerritos Ave., a man is shot and subsequently dies of his wounds.

  • July 10: 1300 block Lewis Ave.: Man is shot (roughly three hours after shooting in 1700 block Cerritos.)

  • July 11: 2400 block Linden Ave.: Man is shot and suffered severe injuries

And earlier this month in the nearby 1st Council district (represented by Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez since mid-2014):

  • On July 4th two adults (a man and a woman ) were shot in the area of 10th St./Lewis Ave.

  • On July 2, a 14 year old boy was shot in the 1000 block of Chestnut Ave (basically ten blocks north of Long Beach City Hall.)

In the first six months of 2015, LB's 1st Council district had six non-fatal shootings (7 if one counts a shooting on the border of district 2) in addition to three fatal shootings (murders) in June (after no fatal shootings from Jan-May.)

In September 2014, Councilmembers Andrews and Gonzalez were among a unanimous Council (9-0) that voted to approve a City Hall budget (FY15) that no longer funds LBPD's field anti-gang unit. LBPD has an anti-gang unit (which does investigative work, etc.) but the Council no longer funds its field anti-gang unit, which had been comprised of 22 sworn officers (20 officers + 2 sergeants.)
