(July 3, 2015, 6:15 a.m.) -- A 14 year old boy was shot on Thursday night (July 2) in the 1000 block of Chestnut Ave. basically ten blocks north of Long Beach City Hall.

Initial information is sketchy at dawn Friday. LBPD's overnight watch commander says the shooting occurred at about 8:30 p.m.; the 14 year old victim was transported by LBFD to a hospital, reported in stable condition. There's no one in custody at this point, and it's not known at this point whether the shooting was gang related.

As previously reported by LBREPORT.com, in the first six months of 2015, LB's 1st Council district, represented by Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez since mid-July 2014, had six non-fatal shootings (7 if one counts a shooting on the border of district 2) in addition to three fatal shootings (murders) in June (after no fatal shootings from Jan-May.)

The 1st Council district was previously represented by Councilman (now Mayor) Robert Garcia, elected in an April 2009 on a campaign promise that his first priority would be clean and safe streets. On taking office, Garcia voted with Council majorities for the largest reductions in LBPD staffing within a five year period in the more than 100 year history of the City of Long Beach, including (in his final Council voting year) the elimination of LBPD's field anti-gang unit. On taking office as Mayor, Garcia recommended a FY15 budget that continued this policy which his endorsed successor, his former office field rep/now-Councilwoman Gonzalez voted with a unanimous Council to approve.
