(July 1, 2016) -- LBPD has announced that a memorial service will be held on July 20 for K9 officer Credo, who died as a result of injuries sustained during a SWAT call-out involving a barricaded suspect wanted in connection with an assault with a deadly weapon investigation.

In a release, LBPD indicates that a memorial service is scheduled as follows:

Date: Wednesday, July 20, 2016
Time: 1:00 p.m.
Location: LBPOA Park
7390 East Carson Street
Long Beach, 90808
(Located at the Long Beach Towne Center behind Lowes)

Parking is limited so carpooling is strongly encouraged.

In lieu of flowers, the Parcells Family requests Credo’s memory be honored by donating to:

LB Police K-9 Officers Association
P.O. Box 17366
Long Beach, CA 90807-7366

On learning that Credo did not survive, a number of officers carried Credo out of the vet hospital, draped in an American flag, as other officers stood at attention and saluted. Among those present was Jojo Stanford of Trots Dog Walking and Training, who captured touching video of the ceremony and uploaded it onto the Trots Dog Walking and Training Facebook page

LBPD has previously indicated that Credo was a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois, and served LBPD for two years alongside his handler, Officer Mike Parcells. During his time on the streets alongside Officer Parcells, Credo worked Patrol and Narcotics, and was involved in over 30 apprehensions.

[LBPD June 29 release text] Officer Parcells is a 23-year veteran of the department and has been a K-9 handler for 16 years. Credo is the second dog that Officer Parcells has lost in the line of duty. On October 2, 2005, at approximately 11:15 p.m., his K-9 partner "Ranger" was shot during a SWAT call out in the 1200 block of Loma Vista Avenue. [See LBREPORT.com note below.] Ranger was severely injured, having sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, and died during surgery. Ranger was also a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois who served the L.B.P.D. and the community for two years.
