(July 18, 2016) -- As LBREPORT.com has previously reported, two men walking in the quiet neighborhood near Clark Ave./South St. (Lakewood) found themselves victimized (July 13) in an attempted armed robbery/assault while playing "PokemonGo" on their smartphones. News stories nationally have reported people taking risks while absorbed in the game's "augmented reality."

Diversified Threat Management (DTM Security, an LBREPORT.com advertiser), cautions that "augmented reality" video games may create personal security threats...and provides a DTM video below.

[Scroll down for further.]

DTM says this about "augmented reality" games:

  • These games are easily downloaded to smart phones.
  • They utilize the camera, screen, and GPS of the phone allowing the player to view their surroundings in augmented reality.
  • Random locations are digitally tagged using GPS and players seek out these random locations to engage virtual characters.
  • Public and private areas are GPS marked causing spontaneous flash mobs.
  • These games are progressing from more wholesome innocent games to the more violent and criminally minded games.

    Threats:

  • Unwanted spontaneous visits by strangers
  • Flash mobs
  • Trespassing
  • Loitering
  • Casing
  • Youth and vulnerable players exploring areas they normally wouldn't visit
  • Sexual predators arranging setups
  • Violent behavior spurred on by "first person shooter" gaming
