(July 18, 2018) -- State Senator Kevin de Leon, the officially endorsed candidate of the CA Democratic Party seeking to replace incumbent U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein -- who yesterday (July 17) administered a ceremonial oath of office to re-elected 7th dist. Councilman Roberto Uranga -- has publicly called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump

In a July 18 mass emailing from his campaign [text below], state Senator de Leon called the President a "treasonous tyrant" and stated that he's committed to impeaching Trump now "and if elected, on the floor of the U.S. Senate."

[State Senator de Leon campaign email text] Never before have we seen an American President degrade our national standing so shamelessly as President Trump did in Helsinki on Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump can try to backtrack, but he has always defended Russia over our Democracy. With the latest indictments and his own actions in Russia, it's clear that President Trump has committed treason against the United States.

That's why I'm calling on leaders in Congress to defend our nation and file articles of impeachment against President Trump -- please join me today.

Trump is a threat to our national security, and cannot be trusted to put the American people's safety and prosperity before his own.

In addition to filing articles of impeachment, Congressional leadership should move this week to protect special prosecutor Robert Mueller.

I am committed to helping achieve this now, and if elected, on the floor of the U.S. Senate -- please add your name if you're with me.

Empty words of outrage and hollow resolutions won't cut it.

We can't afford to wait.

We must take serious action now.

We must protect our nation from this President at all costs.

We must impeach President Trump -- add your name if you agree.

If we work our hearts out in 2018, I know we can safeguard our country from this treasonous tyrant.

Thanks for everything you're doing,

In 2016, Senator de Leon was among the supporters of former Secretary of State/former Senator Hillary Clinton over Senator Bernie Sanders but has since taken positions more consistent with the party's increasingly restive left flank, in contrast to the generally more moderate stances of long-time incumbent Senator Feinstein. In an initial June 5 2018 ballot contest among CA voters, Feinstein finished well ahead of de Leon (44.2% vs. 12.1%) but on July 14, in a visible rebuke to the incumbent, state Democratic Party partisans voted to endorse de Leon over Feinstein.

Following Hillary Clinton's defeat, Senator de Leon swiftly put himself on a collision with the incoming Trump administration. In December 2016, Sen. de Leon introduced and guiding to passage SB 54, officially titled the "CA Values Act" [placed restrictions on law enforcement information sharing] more colloquially dubbed the "CA Sanctuary State" bill.

Reaction to Senator de Leon's call for President Trumps's impeachment from Long Beach Dem Party electeds (who include LB's Mayor, City Council majority and LBCC Board of Trustees majority) is pending as we report these developments as breaking.
