MTV "Beach House" Production Has Gone Without a Hitch, LBPD Says

(June 8, 2004) -- Production of part of MTV's "Beach House" summer television series along the Belmont Shore Peninsula beachfront appears to have taken place without a hitch...with no significant problems or calls for police service reported.

"It seems to have gone very well. No major calls for service that I can see," LBPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Dave Cannan told LBReport.com.

One resident of the area (who acknowledged initial misgivings about producing a rock music telecast on the crowded Peninsula) told LBReport.com he'd seen the site firsthand and "the set appeared very well organized and controlled."

Having the nationally telecast program originate from LB was a major publicity coup for the city, showcasing LB as a hip, cool summer location for millions of demographically desirable viewers.

However some area residents were not pleased that City Hall made most of the arrangements with producers before telling the public...and were further riled when initial disclosures circulated to residents (perhaps by a subcontractor for the producers) contained some misinformation. City Hall's Special Events and Filming Office had to scramble to mail out letters spelling out the production arrangements and conditions in detail in an effort to correct the snafu...but some are residents remained unpersuaded.

In mid-May, the Alamitos Bay Beach Preservation Group (ABBPD) sent a letter to LB City Hall stating in part, "Please be advised that the ABBPD will look to the City and all other groups responsible for promoting or controlling this event to compensate Peninsula residents for any and all damages caused by holding this event in our neighborhood."

A few months earlier, the City of Manhattan Beach turned down a request by the show's producers to originate from their city, citing concern over the number of additional lifeguards and other city services that might be required.

Such problems didn't materialize in LB to date.

A staffer in LB's Special Events and Filming Office told LBReport.com that the lion's share of the videotaping/filming ended last week and some production staff will do smaller work this week. The set and production compound are scheduled to be disassembled by June 11.

In previous years, MTV's "Beach House" originated from San Diego's Mission Beach and elegant areas of Malibu, CA and Long Island, NY among other venues.
