Cong. Rohrabacher Says Safety Issues With LNG Totally Overstated
(June 8, 2005) -- Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R., HB-LB-PV) has told the office of LB Mayor Beverly O'Neill that he believes safety issues surrounding Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) are totally overstated.
During the LB City Council's June 7 discussion a proposal by a Mitsubishi subsidiary to build and operate an 80+ million gallon LNG facility in the Port of LB roughly two miles from downtown LB, Mayor O'Neill announced that her office had received a call from Congressman Rohrabacher, whose district includes the Ports of LB and L.A.:
[Congressman Rohrabacher] called as the Council meeting was started to express his view regarding the LNG issue. He wanted to talk with me. However, the meeting had already started.
He believes that the safety issues with LNG are totally overstated. He said if we have concerns with safety we should focus our attention on our other dangerous facilities currently in the Port. He cited the safety issues resulted from the environmental impacts of these facilities were far greater than any concerns with the LNG and indicated it that it would be a good source of revenue for the city. And we should not look constantly to the federal government for funding.
