  • (June 28, 2009) -- The first night of LB's Summer And Music series drew a healthy crowd to Pine Ave. at Broadway in downtown LB to enjoy free live musical acts, dancing...with food and refreshment available at nearby (and busy) restaurants.

Today's event -- the first in the multiple-act series running through late August -- took place from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. under the theme of "Soul Motion" and featured multiple groups: The New Fidelity, Money Mark, The Boogaloo Assassins and ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra).

LBReport.com stopped by a little after 6 p.m. and captured video of the Boogaloo Assassins in action.

A sizable crowd was visible on Pine Ave...and in nearby restaurants. At Smooth's Sports Grille, John Morris told us, "As I've said for years, music and events bring people downtown. Always have, always will."

Mr. Morris said that last year he envisioned music on Pine Ave. for "seven summer Sundays"...and the Summer and Music series has expanded to include Friday evening concerts at Rainbow Harbor (through Aug. 28) and Saturday midday performances in the East Village (through Aug. 22). "It's all come together," he said.

Mr. Morris also said that he's expecting a large crowd for a July 12 Gospel Sunday on Pine. "It will be incredible. Trust me on this: it will be a truly memorable event," Mr. Morris said.

Downtown LB Associates says the Summer and Music series (which runs through Aug. 29) will span jazz to funk to pop and "will feature local musicians and a variety of creative curricula"...and admission is free.

Details are on the event's website: www.summerandmusic.com.

DLBA and LB's Redevelopment Agency are teaming for this year's Summer and Music series, working with Justin Hectus (co-founder of Schooled In Song) and Rand Foster (owner of ther Belmont Shore record shop Fingerprints) to plan the summer music series.

Disclosures: LBReport.com is among the media sponsors of the Summer and Music series.
