(June 30, 2012) -- Now, it's murder.

In updated information, LBPD says the victim -- a 24 year old Long Beach man -- doesn't appear to be a gang member, just someone walking with another guy as the sun was setting on Friday night in the NW corner of Long Beach. However LBPD says detectives believe the suspects (two of them) are possibly gang members and the crime is being investigated as gang-related.

In a release issued shortly before dusk today (June 30), LBPD says it responded at about 7:30 p.m. on June 29 to a shooting in the area of 67th St/Butler Ave., and [updated information] officers' preliminary investigation indicates that a male suspect (age unstated) "approached two male subjects who were also on foot. The suspect exchanged words with the subjects before firing at them, striking them both. The suspect then fled the scene in a vehicle being driven by someone else."

[LBPD release text] One victim, who is only being identified as a 30-year-old male from Long Beach, was struck in the lower body and was transported to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The second subject, identified as 24-year-old Manny Amaya of Long Beach, was struck in the upper and lower body. He was also transported and listed in critical condition; however, he was pronounced deceased today, June 30, 2012, as a result of injuries sustained in the shooting.

Based on the investigation, it does not appear that either victim were gang members. Although, based on their findings, detectives believe the suspects are possibly gang members and this incident is being investigated as gang-related. No other suspect information is available at this time.

The area in the NW area of LB north of the 91 freeway isn't far from where two people were shot and one died on Jan. 7, 2012. Eight days later, gunfire was exchanged between two individuals with no one hit on Jan. 15, 2012.

LBPD asks anyone who may have information about the June 29 incident to call Homicide Detectives Mark McGuire and Greg Krabbe at (562) 570-7244. Anonymous tips can be submitted via text or web by visiting www.tipsoft.com.
