(July 4, 2012) -- Although there'll be NO fireworks tonight at ELB's Vets Stadium (cancelled months ago by its organizer, the LB Firefighters Memorial Ass'n (coverage click here), in its place Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske has created a "Freedom Fest and Concert" -- with meaningful words followed by free music and food trucks nearby at Rosie the Riveter Park (Clark Ave/Conant Street).
The event, honoring all U.S. service men and women, is free and starts at 5 p.m. The names of 14 Long Beach residents who died while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan will be read aloud at 5:45 p.m. Speakers will include US Coast Guard Capt. Roger LaFerriere and US Navy Commander Stephen M. Ruggiero. Then there'll be a concert, starting at about 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., featuring The Emperors. Again: no fireworks. [LBReport.com comment: That's just as well; July 4th fireworks made in the "Peoples Republic of China" don't sit well with us.] The event is free.
