(June 8, 2012) -- A four day enforcement operation by the Long Beach Police Dept. alongside multiple agencies including the U.S. Marshal Service has resulted in 280 arrests, 170 of which were for felonies with 75 alleged gang members among the total arrestees.
LBPD Chief Jim McDonnell made the announcement alongside Dave Singer, U.S. Marshal for CA's Central District, at a news conference Friday (June 8) at LBPD HQ. "The teamwork and level of organization behind this undertaking was the key to its effectiveness, which we feel will set the tone for the summer, a time when opportunities for crime typically increase," Chief McDonell said. In a release, LBPD said the multi-agency task force began "Operation Summer Heat" on Monday, June 4th and concluded it on Thursday night June 7th. [LBPD release text] The operation focused on suppressing repeat violent offenders and fugitives in Long Beach, and involved months of planning with all agencies involved. More than 200 representatives of these agencies participated, and formed teams that targeted problem locations and criminals engaged in criminal activity such as shootings, gang crimes, and narcotics. The teamwork and level of organization behind this undertaking was key to its effectiveness, and an effort to set the tone for summer, when opportunities for crime typically increase.
