RunRacing (Organizer of LB Marathon) Sends Mass Email Urging Recipients To Email Coastal Commission To "Expand the Bike Path"

(June 11, 2013, 3:00 p.m.) -- LBREPORT.com has learned that Run Racing, the entity that organizes and presents the Long Beach Marathon (as well as other regional running/racing events) has sent a mass emailing with text titled "Expand the Bike Path" in support of adding a second paved path along roughly 3.1 miles of remaining sand between the downtown Marina and 54th Place and urging recipients to "contact the Coastal Commission to make it happen."

The mass emailing, signed by Run Racing CEO Bob Seagren, states in pertinent part:

...There is money set aside for this project that can't be used for public safety, education or other pressing issues. Plans have been drawn up and all we need is a final thumbs up from the California Coastal Commission when they meet at Long Beach City Hall on Thursday morning June 13th at 8:30am. But there are some who don't want to see this happen so please, send an email to as many of the government officials on the bottom of this email as you can and ask them to support the expansion of the bike path in Long Beach.

Of course we at Run Racing would love to have more space and a softer surface for our Half & Full Marathoners to compete on each fall. But the current path is insufficient not just for our growing event, but for the daily usage by local residents.

The insufficient separation between those on wheels and those on foot leads to unsafe conditions on a daily basis. There is not enough room for those who want to enjoy the beach which results in fewer people enjoying the shore. This great resource remains underutilized and the new path could go a long way towards solving these problems.

If the Coastal Commission is serious about its goal to improve access and usage of the shore by the public, then it must approve the construction of this addition path that could safely be used by so many more than the current path will allow.

If you love the beach and want more to be able to use it, please send an email to the commissioners and staff listed below to let them know how you feel...

The mass email lists LB Councilman [Coastal Commission member currently filling unexpired term] Robert Garcia, Long Beach Coastal Commission staffer Charles Posner, City Hall staffer Eric Lopez and four other Coastal Commissioners (Esther Sanchez, Martha McClure, Jana Zimmer and Mary Shallenberger) and adds "Thank you very much for your time and assistance in improving the beach for everyone."

A number of emails now visible with the Coastal Commission agenda item addenda reflect verbiage similar to the email and the suggested cc: list.

In a P.S., the RunRacing email also invites recipients to go to the Gazettes home page "and weigh in on their poll on this topic."

The proposal to add a second paved path to along roughly 3.1 miles of remaining sand on LB's namesake beach from the downtown Marina to 54th Place was embedded by city management as a FY13 budget item (listed among various capital improvement projects) and wasn't specifically agendized, discussed or approved in a project specific vote by the current City Council.
