Updated Information Re Fatal Accident Involving Single Motorcycle, Del Amo near Locust



(June 3, 2013) -- LBPD has issued a release on last night's (June 2) fatal single motorcycle accident.

[LBPD release text] On June 2, 2013, at approximately 6:49 P.M., Long Beach Police responded to a traffic accident at Del Amo Blvd and Elm Street.

  • Arriving officers discovered a motorcycle hit a tree and exploded on impact, causing the tree, motorcycle and driver to catch fire
  • Long Beach Fire responded, extinguished the fire, and discovered the driver deceased at the scene
  • Preliminary investigation revealed the victim was driving a 2007 Yamaha RS and traveling westbound Del Amo Boulevard, approaching Elm Street
  • Victim was riding with a group of four other motorcyclist friends, when the victim attempted to pass the group on the right, in the number three lane, at a high rate of speed
  • Victim lost control of his motorcycle, struck the curb and then a tree, causing an explosion on impact
  • The group of friends stopped and attempted to rescue the victim from the fire until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived
  • The driver has been identified as Daniel Thy, a 22 year-old resident of Long Beach
  • The victim had recently bought the motorcycle and did not have a valid motorcycle drivers license

(June 2, 2013, initial report 8:55 p.m.) -- LBREPORT.com has learned of a fatal injury traffic accident in which a single motorcycle was involved in the area of Del Amo Blvd. near Locust Ave..

LBPD responded to the area at aproximately 6:50 p.m.

A man (adult) was pronounced deceased at the scene.

LBPD Detectives are conducting an investigation.

In the 8:00 p.m. hour, LBPD issued an email advisory recommending that drivers avoid Del Amo Blvd. between Atlantic and Locust Aves. for the next several hours due to an investigation.
