VIDEO: John Goya Announces Run For Long Beach-San Pedro Assembly Seat, Latino Candidate Blasts Sac'to Dem Policies In Candidacy Announcement

(June 10, 2013) -- John Goya has announced that he will seek the Long Beac-San Pedro area Assembly seat being vacated in 2014 by term-limited incumbent Bonnie Lowenthal.

Annoucning his candidacy at a May 23 fundraising BBQ for the Long Beach Area Republican Party, Mr. Goya blasted current Sacramento policies and vowed changes. To hear his remarks on a YouTube page uploaded by Latin Politics, click video link below.

Mr. Goya, who is bilingual, will be running in a field that currently includes three Dems: incumbent Long Beach Councilman O'Donnell, former Long Beach Councilmember Tonia Reyes Uranga and incumbent Signal Hill Councilman Ed Wilson.

Around the Capitol.com lists the 70th Assembly district as 49.9% registered Dem, 27.7% registered Repub and the remainder decline to state or other.

Under voter approved election changes which took effect in the 2012 election cycle, the top two finishers in a June 2014 initial election -- regardless of their party affiliation -- proceed to a November 2014 runoff.

In the 2012 election cycle, incumbent Bonnie Lowenthal (term limited and exiting in 2014) received roughly 2/3 of the vote against Repub Martha Flores-Gibson. (Ms. Flores-Gibson has announced a 2014 run for Long Beach's 3rd district City Council seat being vacated by incumbent Gary DeLong).
