Int'l Space Stn Will Pass Nearly Directly Over Long Beach Tonight, Should Be Visible Throughout L.A./OC Area *IF* Clouds, Haze & Fog Stay Away; Details On Time And Path Here

(June 5, 2013) -- The International Space Station will pass nearly directly over Long Beach tonight -- and the entire L.A.-OC area (and beyond) could get a long, bright view of the spacecraft for over six minutes IF clouds or haze or fog don't interfere (it's iffy as we publish this advisory).

The Space Station's orbit will take it from SW to NE in an orbit passing almost directly above Long Beach -- 89 degrees (with 90 degrees is directly above). The orbit appears to be basically above parts of OC but the spacecraft should be visible at somewhat lower angles from other parts of the L.A. area and beyond.

In Long Beach and nearby, it will first appear in the SW sky at about 10 degrees above the horizon just before 8:50 p.m. (when it will still be well over the Pacific). It will ascend to its maximum elevation nearly directly over Long Beach at 8:53:11 p.m. and then head into the NW sky where it will disappear by about 8:56:28 (by which time the spacecraft will be well past Nevada toward Colorado.)

And yes, there are real people aboard.

NASA.gov says "Commander Pavel Vinogradov and Flight Engineers Chris Cassidy and Alexander Misurkin continue their stay aboard the International Space Station. The trio is scheduled to remain aboard until September 2013. They began their stay when they docked their Soyuz TMA-08M spacecraft to the station on March 28, 2013. Flight Engineers Karen Nyberg, Fyodor Yurchikhin, Luca Parmitano launched to the station on May 28 aboard the Soyuz TMA-09M to round out the six-person Expedition 36 crew. Yurchikhin will become the commander of Expedition 37 once Vinogradov, Cassidy and Misurkin undock in November."

The Space Station will look like a bright, moving star from the ground...but it's actually the giant mass in the photo below.

A Space Station viewing opportunity is a teachable moment for the kidlets...and it's free.

Pass it on via Facebook and Twitter...and enjoy.
