Long Beach Area Republican Party Board Chair Is Now John Watkins

(June 10, 2013) -- LBREPORT.com has belatedly noticed [about six months after the fact] that the Long Beach Area Republican Party now lists John Watkins as its Board Chair. Mr. Watkins, a retired LBPD Sergeant, finished third to Councilman Patrick O'Donnell (running a write-in campaign) and Daryl Supernaw (who finished first) in the April 2012 LB city election for 4th district City Council. (O'Donnell, backed by organized labor including the LB Police and Firefighter PACs, outpolled Supernaw in the June runoff).

Tim O'Reilly, who finished second to Doug Haubert in the 2010 election cycle for City Prosecutor, is listed as the group's Vice Chair. Dorothy Kistler is Officer and Precinct Captain Chair.

In related news, a Republican has surfaced in the Long Beach Assembly race: John C. Goya. For LBREPORT.com coverage of his candidacy announcement (with video), click here.

Mr. Goya will be running in a field that currently includes incumbent Councilman O'Donnell, former LB Councilmember Tonia Reyes Uranga and incumbent Signal Hill Councilman Ed Wilson.

Around the Capitol.com lists the 70th Assembly district as 49.9% registered Dem, 27.7% Repub and the remainder decline to state or other. In the 2012 election cycle, incumbent Bonnie Lowenthal (now term limited and exiting in 2014) outpolled Repub Martha Flores-Gibson roughly two to one.
