(June 20, 2014, 1:10 p.m.) -- In a release today (June 20), LBPD describes a frightening scenario it says unfolded at late afternoon yesterday (June 19) on LBCC's PCH campus in which it says a 26 year old man -- an enrolled LBCC student on parole -- allegedly ran from police, refused to stop and surrender, pulled a handgun from his backpack as he entered the campus automotive shop, with the gun in hand entered an occupied classroom, ran through the classroom and allegedly pointed the gun at the pursuing officer who discharged his weapon, striking the suspect.
LBPD's release says its detectives determined that the suspect also allegedly discharged his weapon and recovered a handgun at the scene. LBPD took the suspect into custody and booked him for an alleged parole violation as it continues its investigation. Below is LBPD's release text: [LBPD release text] -- On Thursday, June 19, 2014, around 5:30 p.m., Long Beach Police were on routine patrol in the area of Walnut Avenue & Pacific Coast Highway when they encountered a man with a gun, which resulted in an officer involved shooting. (June 20, 2014, 6:45 a.m.) -- As reported Thursday on our front page, LBPD says an LBCC-enrolled student fled from police and ran through part of LBCC's PCH/Walnut campus at late afternoon Thursday (June 19) in a foot pursuit in which he was ultimately shot by police and no one else was physically injured...although what took place left some students emotionally shaken by what they saw/heard. LBCC said on its website (June 19) that at approximately 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 19, an LBPD officer observed a group of people who appeared to be in an argument off of Pacific Coast Highway and Walnut Avenue... "Upon approaching the group, the suspect ran from the officer into the Pacific Coast Campus of Long Beach City College (LBCC). The male suspect [allegedly] fired a shot toward the officer and the officer returned fire, injuring the suspect, who was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital. No further injuries were reported and all other classes continued as scheduled. The suspect was an enrolled student at LBCC." LBPD Public Information Officer Marlene Arrona (in preliminary information) stopped short of saying the man opened fire on the officer, but notes that a gun was recovered at the scene. She adds that a release is expected later today (Fri. June 20.) LBREPORT.com will update this story with further as we learn it. blog comments powered by Disqus
