(June 20, 2014, 1:10 p.m.) -- In a release today (June 20), LBPD describes a frightening scenario it says unfolded at late afternoon yesterday (June 19) on LBCC's PCH campus in which it says a 26 year old man -- an enrolled LBCC student on parole -- allegedly ran from police, refused to stop and surrender, pulled a handgun from his backpack as he entered the campus automotive shop, with the gun in hand entered an occupied classroom, ran through the classroom and allegedly pointed the gun at the pursuing officer who discharged his weapon, striking the suspect.

LBPD's release says its detectives determined that the suspect also allegedly discharged his weapon and recovered a handgun at the scene. LBPD took the suspect into custody and booked him for an alleged parole violation as it continues its investigation.

Below is LBPD's release text:

[LBPD release text] -- On Thursday, June 19, 2014, around 5:30 p.m., Long Beach Police were on routine patrol in the area of Walnut Avenue & Pacific Coast Highway when they encountered a man with a gun, which resulted in an officer involved shooting.

Officers were driving on Walnut Avenue, to the rear of the Long Beach City College, Pacific Coast Campus (PCC), when they observed four subjects involved in an argument in the parking lot near the automotive mechanics classrooms.

Officers contacted the subjects to investigate further. During the contact, one subject with a backpack fled from the officers and ran onto the campus towards the automotive classrooms. Officers went in foot pursuit, ordering the suspect to stop and surrender.

During the foot chase, the suspect pulled a handgun out of the backpack as he entered the automotive shop. Officers continued to give orders directing the suspect to stop and surrender.

The suspect, with the gun in his hand, then entered a classroom that was occupied with students. As the suspect ran through the classroom, he pointed the weapon at the officer, endangering the officer and students. The officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect in the lower torso. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

Through the course of their investigation, detectives determined the suspect also discharged his weapon. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported the suspect, in stable condition, to a local hospital where he was treated and released for booking.

The suspect was booked for a parole violation, while the investigation continues. The case will be presented to the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office and they will determine further charges.

The suspect has been identified as 26-year-old Travis Brown of Long Beach, a student enrolled at Long Beach City College.

No students were injured during this incident and most classes resumed, as scheduled, the same day. School officials indicated counselors would be available for students returning to summer session classes on Monday, June 23, 2014.

The Long Beach Homicide Detail investigates all officer involved shootings. Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact Homicide Detectives Hugo Cortes and Peter Lackovic at (562) 570-7244.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office is also conducting an independent investigation of the shooting, as they do with all officer involved shootings that occur in Los Angeles County that result in injury or death.

(June 20, 2014, 6:45 a.m.) -- As reported Thursday on our front page, LBPD says an LBCC-enrolled student fled from police and ran through part of LBCC's PCH/Walnut campus at late afternoon Thursday (June 19) in a foot pursuit in which he was ultimately shot by police and no one else was physically injured...although what took place left some students emotionally shaken by what they saw/heard.

LBCC said on its website (June 19) that at approximately 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 19, an LBPD officer observed a group of people who appeared to be in an argument off of Pacific Coast Highway and Walnut Avenue... "Upon approaching the group, the suspect ran from the officer into the Pacific Coast Campus of Long Beach City College (LBCC). The male suspect [allegedly] fired a shot toward the officer and the officer returned fire, injuring the suspect, who was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital. No further injuries were reported and all other classes continued as scheduled. The suspect was an enrolled student at LBCC."

LBPD Public Information Officer Marlene Arrona (in preliminary information) stopped short of saying the man opened fire on the officer, but notes that a gun was recovered at the scene. She adds that a release is expected later today (Fri. June 20.)
