[LBPD release text] -- On Monday, June 22, 2015, about 8:45 a.m., Long Beach Police were dispatched to the area of the 800 block Cedar Avenue regarding a shooting call, which resulted in the death of a male adult. (June 23, 2015) -- As flashed on our front page and followed throughout the day yesterday (June 22), a man (adult) was shot and killed on Monday morning in the 800 block of Cedar Ave -- basically eight blocks due north of LB City Hall. In the coming hours we expect an LBPD release with further information and we'll update this story accordingly. Less than three weeks ago (June 6, 2015), a man was shot and wounded in the 1000-1100 block of Cedar Ave. Below is a map, compiled by LBREPORT.com, of fatal and non-fatal shootings cumulated since Jan. 1, 2014. (Our map is unofficial, compiled from shootings confirmed by LBPD; a separate map (not shown here) indicates add'l shootings in NLB.)
The latest shooting was in LB's 1st Council district, represented since mid-July 2014 by Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez, who prior to her election was an aide in the office of Councilman/Vice Mayor now Mayor Robert Garcia. Garcia represented the area for the preceding five years (May 2009-mid-July 2014) and from mid-2010 chaired the Council's Public Safety Committee (chosen by then-Mayor Bob Foster.) During this period, Mayor Foster proposed budgets on which Garcia's Public Safety Committee held no hearings, and with Council majority support eliminated the largest number of sworn citywide deployable officers for taxpayers within a five year period in the more than 100 year hstory of the City of Long Beach.
