The uplifting event (literally and figuratively) took place June 3 outside Jordan High's main gate, organized by 9th district Councilman Rex Richardson, flanked by several of the honored graduates (photo below). Others speaking were LBUSD Board Member Megan Kerr, LB Library Services Director Glenda Williams, with especially stirring words from Jordan Principal Shawn Ashley (begins 8;12 into video.)

The event was capped by heartfelt extemporaneous gratitude expressed by CSULB-bound graduate Justin Hatchett (all on VIDEO link below.)

The street-light banners are very visible along major streets near the Jordan High campus. They honor -- by name -- graduating seniors now on their way to attending four-year universities or the U.S. Armed Forces. The banners are displayed on Atlantic Ave. between South Street and Artesia Blvd. and across Artesia Blvd. between Atlantic Ave. and Brayton Street.

"The Long Beach community celebrates 150 college and US Armed Forces bound graduates of Jordan High School," said Councilman Richardson in an event release. "The City’s installation of these banners recognizes years of hard work and dedication to excellence, and allows the whole community to join us in extending our congratulations."

Principal Ashley stated in the event release: "The banners are "a clear message that our children are mindful of the importance of academics and have a vision for their future...In addition, the children who walk our streets will see the banners and say to themselves I, too, will go to college and be a success."

One hundred fifty Jordan High graduates are now college-bound or armed-services bound, the release says.

The event also acknowledged the work of the North Long Beach Whole Village Initiative, formed in October 2014 and comprised of [release text] "selected community leaders and city staff who designed innovative ways to increase college awareness, and help youth continue on to college and career paths. Over the course of the past six months, members of the College Readiness Task Force crafted two recommendations to place a greater focus on enriching the lives of students and families in the North Long Beach area. The two recommendations are: 1) To host a series of programs around college readiness and trade career paths, including information on planning for your child’s future, how to obtain scholarships and apply for financial aid, and college and trade school fairs; and 2) To recognize our college-bound scholars."
