(June 16, 2015) -- In the 8:00 p.m. hour on Tuesday June 16, LBPD added the statement (below) to its June 15 release regarding a June 14 officer-involved shooting (area Artesia Blvd./Orizaba Ave.) The statement indicates that the wounded officer was struck by a round fired by another officer [an earlier LBPD release indicated three other officers returned fire] after an armed suspect allegedly opened fire on more than one officer. In other words, the wounded officer was struck by "friendly fire" as fellow officers responded to hostile fire. LBPD's statement adds that it believes "that evidence shows the suspect fired at more than one officer on scene" and LBPD "will present a case with two charges of attempt murder of a police officer" to the LA County DA's office for filing consideration. LBPD released statement text] Update (6/16/2015): Examination of ballistic evidence from the June 14, 2015, officer involved shooting has shown a round collected from the wall directly behind the injured officer came from the suspect’s gun. The bullet recovered from the injured officer came from a different officer who was returning fire at the suspect. Additional ballistic evidence exists and is still being evaluated; however, at this time, we believe that evidence shows the suspect fired at more than one officer on scene. On Wednesday, June 17, 2015, Long Beach detectives will present a case with two charges of attempt murder of a police officer to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for filing consideration. LBPD says a woman called to report shots fired. An officer responded and encountered a woman screaming for help who said a man had fired a gun in the apartment complex. That brought multiple officers to the scene, who entered the apartment complex...and the armed suspect allegedly began shooting at an officer. The officer was hit...and three officers returned fire at the suspect. The suspect was hit but still resisted officers, LBPD says. An electronic device [we presume a Taser] was used...and the suspect was taken into custody. The officer and suspect both suffered non-life-threatening wounds. The suspect, identified by LBPD as Eric Arroyo, 31, of Long Beach (who remains hospitalized), was booked for attempted murder of a police officer. Below is LBPD's release. [Scroll down for further.]
