(June 3, 2015, 8:10 a.m.) -- Long Beach City Prosecutor Doug Haubert, along with a LBPD gang detective and a senior prosecutor assistant, are in Washington, D.C. today (June 3) to deliver a presenation for members of Congress and their staffs -- organized by the office of Congressman [and famed Civic Rights figure] John Lewis (D., GA) [beaten in 1965 "Blood Sunday" at Selma, Alabama's Edmund Pettus bridge] -- to highlight the Long Beach community-based gang prosecution strategy pioneered and implemented by Mr. Haubert's office.

In a letter to his Congressional colleagues, Congressman Lewis states:

I write to bring to your attention an invitation that your office received to a discussion entitled, "Innovations in Criminal Justice: Briefing on Successful Community-Based Prosecution." The briefing is scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in 121 Cannon House Office Building.

This event will highlight a successful model of community-based prosecution featuring innovative prevention and reintroduction programs. Police and prosecutors in California are building community partnerships, working with schools to reduce truancy and using technology to target the most active gang members. This briefing will spotlight how Long Beach's Gang Prevention Strategy, recognized by Neighborhood's USA as one of America's "Best Neighborhood Programs," is combating criminal street gangs as well as notorious prison gangs like the Mexican Mafia through a successful community-based model.

The discussion will outline how one city is aligning family, school and community safety initiatives into a strategically coordinated violence prevention plan. Those interested in how the White House Initiative My Brother's Keeper is being implemented at the local level are especially encouraged to attend.

Panelists Include:

  • Hon. Douglas P. Haubert, Long Beach City Prosecutor
  • Det. Christopher Zamora, LBPD, Gang Expert who has testified in over 100 trial, including many gang-related murders
  • Tracy McGee, Senior Prosecutor Assistant, Long Beach City Prosecutor's Office...
  • We'll report how the presentation went as we learn it.
