(June 18, 2016, updated at 12:40 p.m. from initial 8:40 a.m.) -- The crime stats will show it as a "no-hit" shooting and an armed robbery, but what actually happened is even worse. LBREPORT.com has learned that in broad daylight/early evening Friday June 17, a man was robbed at gunpoint in Lakewood near LB's 8th Council district border; the robbers took off in a vehicle; the victim pursused them in a vehicle; they headed into northern North Long Beach (9th dist.) where someone in the robbers/suspects' vehicle shot at their victim...but missed. At this point, the suspects remain at large (they're on the street where they can do this again.)

[Updated information] LBPD PIO Sgt. Bradley Johnson says a man (adult) was the victim of an armed robbery in the area of Paramount Blvd./Candlewood St. when two suspects allegedly approached him and robbed him at gunpoint of his jewelry and cash. The suspects sped off...and the victim followed the suspects in his his own car. The victim chased the suspect vehicle to the area of Orizaba Ave./65th St. where the two suspects allegedly stopped, got out of their vehicle and fired at the victim. The victim wasn't hit...but numerous casings were recovered. LBPD is investigating what took place as possibly gang related.
This was the second "northtown" (8th-9th dist) shooting within six hours on June 17. In the noon-hour Friday, gunfire flew in the area of Elm Ave./Plymouth St. in the 8th Council district (area west of Atlantic, south of Market St.) although no person(s) or property were hit. And in the early morning hours Saturday (June 18), two people were shot/wounded in the 200 block of Hullett St. in the 9th district (near border with 8th district) roughly a block north of the historic Long Beach Dairy and Creamery (separate coverage coming on LBREPORT.com). The initial version of this story indicated the armed robbery was in Long Beach when it was steps away in Lakewood near the border of LB's 8th Council district.
On Sept 15 and 22, 2015 the Council voted (without dissent) to adopt a FY16 budget, recommended by Mayor Robert Garcia, that failed to restore LBPD's former field anti-gang unit. It leaves LB taxpayers with a budgeted police level for citywide deployment roughly equivalent per capita to what L.A. would have if L.A.'s Mayor and Council cut roughly 30% of LAPD's officers. In August 2012, Mayor Foster first recommended the budgeted elimination of LBPD's field anti-gang unit. The Council balked, funded the unit at half strength for a year, but in subsequent years quietly let it disappear. Other recent shootings:
