(June 25, 2016) -- Gunfire flew -- damaging a residence and a street light -- in the 4000 block of Gardenia Ave. (one block west of Cherry Ave., just south of Carson St.) in the NE corner of the 7th Council district.
LBPD Public Information Officer Marlene Arrona says (preliminary information) that at about 10:30 a.m. on June 25, officers were dispatched to the 4000 block of Gardenia Ave. regarding a "found-property" report call but arrived to find bullet casings in the street and damage to a street light and a residence. No injured person(s) was located...and a report of a shooting at an inhabited dwelling was filed. It's currently unclear exactly when the shots were fired...and LBPD's investigation is ongoing. On Sept 15 and 22, 2015 the Council voted (without dissent) to adopt a FY16 budget, recommended by Mayor Robert Garcia, that failed to restore LBPD's former field anti-gang unit. It leaves LB taxpayers with a budgeted police level for citywide deployment roughly equivalent per capita to what L.A. would have if L.A.'s Mayor and Council cut roughly 30% of LAPD's officers. It's currently unclear to what extent the June 25 shootings are or aren't gang related, but LBPD has indicated that most of LB's violent crime is gang related. In August 2012, Mayor Foster first recommended the budgeted elimination of LBPD's field anti-gang unit. The Council balked, funded the unit at half strength for a year, but in subsequent years quietly let it disappear. Other recent shootings:
