(June 22, 2016, UPDATED 4:20 p.m. and 9:50 a.m. from initial 6:58 a.m.) -- In a brief but stunning announcement shortly before adjournment of Tuesday night's (June 21) Long Beach City Council meeting, 6th district Councilman Dee Andrews indicated publicly that a newly hired Council office staffer in his office had been attacked earlier that day (June 21), struck in the head and rendered unconscious for what he called a short period of time.

"Today at about noontime, my staffmember was seriously attacked...and struck in the head, and for a moment she was unconscious." Councilman Andrews said. He thanked the Long Beach Fire Department "for their excellent care" as well as and Police Department "for their quick reaction" and added: "We hope that we can find justice for her and the violent act will not go unpunished."

Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez also briefly mentioned the incident in her closing Council remarks, offering her well-wishes, stating that she "hopes she [the staffer] gets better."
