[LBPD release text] On Tuesday, June 28, 2016, around 9 a.m., members of the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force requested Long Beach Police assistance when a suspect fled to the 2800 block of East 15th Street, where a subsequent officer involved shooting occurred.
(June 28, 2016, reflects continuing updates) -- LBPD K9 officer "Credo" is dead, and a suspect is deceased, with events still sketchy at late afternoon following LBPD activity in the area of Temple/Orizaba Aves. between 14th/15th Streets. LBREPORT.com had events as breaking on our front page and our Facebook page, including on-demand video from on-scene coverage of LBPD's early afternoon news briefing.
At midmorning, LBPD indicated that it was conducting an investigation in the area of the 2800 block of East 15th Street involving a male adult suspect wanted related to an assault with a deadly weapon case and that multiple streets in the area were blocked. LBREPORT.com reported the information as breaking and headed to the scene. We arrived after the shooting and saw a SWAT van in an east-west alley in the vicinity of 15th St. (photos below after the shooting.)
At an early afternoon news briefing (video above), LBPD confirmed that an officer involved shooting occurred. LBPD Deputy Chief Richard Conant indicated that the suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Earlier in the day, we saw multiple police units awaiting news.
A procession of officers subsequently escorted K9 officer Credo's body from the hospital, draped in an American flag. We're awaiting information in an LBPD release with information on what took place earlier today and we'll update information on this page accordingly.
