UPDATE: LBPD Says Knife-Armed Suspect (Wanted For Multi-Victim LB Shooting) Led To Officer-Involved Shooting In Which K9 Officer Credo Fought With Suspect, Tried To Stop His Advance; An Officer Fired, Fatally Wounding Suspect...And K9 Officer Credo

(June 28, 2016, 9:20 p.m.) -- In a release issued tonight (June 28, full text below), LBPD indicates that an allegedly knife-armed suspect (wanted for a multi-victim LB shooting) precipitated the chain of events that culminated in an officer-involved shooting this morning (June 28) in which officers first used intermediate force and K9-officer Credo fought with the suspect in trying to stop his advance...and as the suspect continued to advance, an officer fired his weapon, fatally wounding the suspect...and K9 officer Credo.

[LBPD release text] On Tuesday, June 28, 2016, around 9 a.m., members of the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force requested Long Beach Police assistance when a suspect fled to the 2800 block of East 15th Street, where a subsequent officer involved shooting occurred.

The preliminary investigation revealed the following:

  • A U.S. Marshals Task Force, in which Long Beach Police participates, spotted a male adult suspect, wanted in connection with a December 2014 shooting involving multiple victims in Long Beach
  • Task Force members contacted the suspect in the area of 16th Street and Temple Avenue. The suspect fled on foot and a foot pursuit ensued.
  • The suspect ran into an apartment of an acquaintance, located in the 2800 block of East 15th Street
  • Long Beach Police responded to assist and established a containment
  • The suspect was considered armed and dangerous and the Long Beach Special Weapons and Tactics Team (S.W.A.T.) was activated
  • As a precautionary measure nearby residences were evacuated while the investigation continued
  • S.W.A.T. deployed and directed the suspect to exit the residence
  • The suspect exited the residence and failed to comply with the officers' verbal commands
  • As the suspect began to aggressively charge the officers, intermediate force options were deployed, including a 40mm rubber baton round and a Police Service dog attached to S.W.A.T.
  • The suspect continued his aggressive charge toward officers while canine Credo continued to try and stop the suspect from advancing towards officers
  • As Credo fought with the suspect, the suspect produced a knife...

...while continuing to advance towards officers. One of the officers discharged his weapon to protect himself and the other officers from the suspect. Both the suspect and Credo were struck by gunfire.

  • Long Beach Fire Department transported the suspect to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased Credo was transported by his handler to a local veterinarian hospital where he succumbed to his injuries
  • The knife was recovered at the scene.
  • The Los Angeles County Coroner is conducting an independent investigation. The identity of the suspect will be released after next of kin has been notified.

    The Police Department thoroughly reviews all use of force incidents through a rigorous multi-step process that evaluates legal, policy, tactical, and equipment issues. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office is conducting an independent investigation of the shooting, as they do with all officer involved shootings that occur in Los Angeles County that result in injury or death.

    (June 28, 2016, reflects continuing updates) -- LBPD K9 officer "Credo" is dead, and a suspect is deceased, with events still sketchy at late afternoon following LBPD activity in the area of Temple/Orizaba Aves. between 14th/15th Streets.

    At midmorning, LBPD indicated that it was conducting an investigation in the area of the 2800 block of East 15th Street involving a male adult suspect wanted related to an assault with a deadly weapon case and that multiple streets in the area were blocked. LBREPORT.com reported the information as breaking and headed to the scene.

    We arrived after the shooting and saw a SWAT van in an east-west alley in the vicinity of 15th St. (photos below after the shooting.)

    At an early afternoon news briefing (video above), LBPD confirmed that an officer involved shooting occurred. LBPD Deputy Chief Richard Conant indicated that the suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

    Earlier in the day, we saw multiple police units awaiting news.

    A procession of officers subsequently escorted K9 officer Credo's body from the hospital, draped in an American flag.
